What Are Foundation Skills?

Foundation skills are the basic skills you use every day to learn, work, and communicate with others. They help you understand what you need to do, complete tasks, and work safely and confidently in a workplace or learning environment.

These skills are an important part of every course and are checked as part of your training.

Foundation skills include your ability to:

  • Read instructions, signs, and information
  • Write simple messages, notes, or forms
  • Speak and listen to others clearly
  • Use numbers for things like counting, measuring, or basic calculations
  • Learn new skills and ask questions when needed
  • Solve problems when something goes wrong
  • Show initiative and take responsibility for your work
  • Work with others as part of a team
  • Plan and organise tasks and manage your time
  • Manage yourself, including following rules and staying on task
  • Use technology, such as computers, tablets, or workplace equipment

In simple terms, foundation skills help you do your job properly, learn new things, and work well with others.

What Is Accredited Training?

Accredited training is training that officially counts. It is approved by the government and recognised across Australia. When you complete accredited training, you are learning skills that employers trust and can use for work or further study. Your training follows national standards, and you must show what you can do through assessment. When you finish, you may receive a recognised qualification or a statement of attainment that proves what you have achieved.
